I never imagined you before you came,
no prophet in my vacant air,
I heard no whisper of your name
no footsteps on my winding stair.
Then suddenly you were my gift
from life’s great fountainhead of love
with unreserved arms to lift
towards my welcoming smile above.
I gave you sustenance to grow
the cloak of any truth I knew.
I raised you up when you felt low,
I guided you through wrath and rue.
And over you my roof of love
greater than your eyes could see,
wholly all my flesh and blood
loved as long as life will be.
I have loved you to my utmost deep
and always will
until my waning sun steeps west
beyond the irrevocable hill.
